The Art of Anticipation: How EAs and Artists Read the Room
One of the most valuable skills I’ve picked up—both as an artist and as an Executive Assistant—is the ability to read the room.
It’s not exactly magic, though it can feel that way when you’re doing it right. 🪄🎩🐇
The Art of Anticipation occurs when we listen, observe, and maintain curiosity. In art, it’s noticing where the composition needs breathing room or what emotion a piece is quietly expressing. As an EA, it’s sensing when someone’s overwhelmed, spotting gaps in a schedule, or prepping something before it’s even requested.
This kind of awareness isn’t loud, but it’s powerful. It helps me stay a step ahead—not by guessing, but by being present. 🧘♀️
Artists and EAs both work in subtle ways. We notice patterns, adjust the vibe, and bring things into alignment—whether that’s a painting or a busy workday. We’re often the ones smoothing the edges, filling the gaps, or making something run more beautifully behind the scenes.
If you’re someone who feels like they can read between the lines, that’s a gift. Use it! Whether you're making art or supporting a team, your ability to anticipate is part of your brilliance.
Need some support in this area? Consider bringing a skilled EA onto your team. Or, if you want to strengthen your own anticipation skills, keep reading for a few simple tips!
How to Practice the Art of Anticipation:
1. Pay attention to patterns. 🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹
Noticing what usually happens can help you see what might happen next. Keep an eye out for patterns in schedules, tones, or habits.
2. Take a moment.
Something not sitting quite right with you? Have a feeling that something needs some extra attention? Give yourself a moment to reflect on the situation. Some of the best cues are subtle. Slow down, observe, and give yourself space to notice what’s going on beneath the surface.
3. Let curiosity invite innovation. 🪄✨
Ask yourself, “What would make this easier for everyone in five minutes?” That small shift in perspective builds anticipation muscles fast. Stay curious about how you can make things easier, more seamless, more efficient. Look for simple solutions to life’s little problems, and you’ll find yourself making the world a little better all the time.
